In their search for a new home after a cloud of "Swarming Leaf Gobblers" devours the plants in the Great Valley, Littlefoot, Cera, Spike, Ducky and Petrie cross the Big Water to a mysterious island where they become reacquainted with Chomper, a young Sharptooth.

On the edge of the Great Valley stands mysterious Saurus Rock and twin Threehorns, Dinah and Dana, have run away to find it. Could the mysterious Longneck named Doc be the famous Lone Dinosaur? To find out, Littlefoot and friends must cross the Great Valley and face a dangerous Sharptooth themselves! Along the way they learn about change, acceptance and responsibility.

This story opens on a small farm where Beth, Tommy and their parents are all worried about finding the money to buy each other gifts. But when their Dad sells the one thing they care about most in order to give the kids store-bought presents, it looks like it might be the unmerriest Christmas ever. With some magic the family learns that the best gifts don't come from the store, but from the heart.

Littlefoot has a vivid dream in which he imagines travelling to a place where there are many of his kind, and when he tells the story to his grandparents, they take it as a sign to set out and find this mysterious place. After days of travel they do indeed discover a new world where longneck dinosaurs are plentiful, including one they never expected to see -- Bron, Littlefoot's father, who went missing before he was born.
